Dane Yates (b. 1994) is an award-winning regional composer, sound designer and audiovisual artist whose electroacoustic practice explores the relationship between music, dance, theatre, film and sound art. His work reflects an ongoing interest in the organic and the subversion of subject, and spans shed shows on the outskirts of Geraldton, Western Australia to performances in the Sydney Opera House, carrying a distinctly regional nuance well beyond the postcode, and occasionally into considerably better acoustics.
Deeply rooted in regional identity, Dane's sound design has gained recognition nationally and internationally, with works performed and presented in theatres across the Americas, Asia, Europe and the UK. His practice includes commissioned original compositions for chamber orchestra and has developed through sustained collaboration with dance and movement-based artists, including work with Sydney Dance Company, STRUT Dance, Co:3 and Lewis Major Projects, alongside independent choreographers across Australia and WAAPA, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Composition and Music Technology in 2016.
His audiovisual and sound art practice includes I’m Still Here (with Clare Lynch), nominated for the 2021 APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award for Excellence in a Regional Area, and Declamation Dust, recipient of the 2025 Jury Prize in the Jury Art Prize. He has been a finalist in the Midwest Art Prize (2021, 2023) and the City of Rockingham and City of Belmont Art Prizes (2025), and was awarded a Next Level Fellowship through Regional Arts WA in 2020, supporting a residency, commission and presentation of his work in Geraldton Regional Art Gallery's inaugural online exhibition. Currently under the mentorship of Ben Frost, his professional development also includes mentorships with Nick Wales, James Brown and composer-choreographer Hofesh Shechter, as well as residencies at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg, Bundanon and across regional Western Australia.
His film work has included international screenings and the Revelation Award for Best Music Soundtrack at the 2016 Revelation Perth International Film Festival. Since 2023, Dane has been founder and Artistic Director of Etude; the Midwest Art Music Ensemble, commissioning and curating new works by regional and international artists. Most recently, Dane was a recipient of the 2026 APRA/AMCOS Art Music Fund.
